The Gathering Hurling Festival 2013

5 I am delighted to be afforded this opportunity to extend a special ‘Céad Míle Fáilte’ on behalf of Cumann Lúthchleas Gael to the first ever International Hurling Festival. It is a wonderful weekend for all involved and I have no doubt good times will be had and further friendships forged. The Festival will see the best hurlers from USA, South America, Canada, Britain, Continental Europe, the Middle East and Australia descend on Galway to compete in what promises to be a fiercely contested competition. During this three day event, participants will have the chance not only to showcase their talents at one of the world’s most skilful games, but to also experience the ceol, craic and culture that is a part of our nation. The GAA are delighted to be supporting The Gathering, in bringing hurling supporters from all over the world back to our shores with thanks to Aer Lingus, in association with Etihad Airways. It is events like the International Hurling Festival that help with the promotion, development and enjoyment of Gaelic Games both at home and overseas. The contribution of our GAA clubs to the Irish diaspora over the past 129 years is much more significant than merely the legacy of the organisation of our national games. GAA clubs overseas have represented the passion that is unique to the GAA, the involvement that we all strive for and the enjoyment that makes all the work worthwhile. Finally, I would like to extend my sincerest congratulations and best wishes to the organising committee, host clubs, Galway County Board and the main sponsors Aer Lingus and Etihad Airways and all players and officials involved on what promises to be a great weekend of excitement, fun and celebration of Gaelic games and our Irish culture.
